Hard not to see technology as non-futuristic

Despite the fact I was told not to get too impressed or in state of aw about new things I discover related to technology, I don’t think I can do it. I cannot help from being astonished with every little new thing I see every day. Even though the use of technology can be something common, normal to some, for others it can be indeed incredible and frightening. I never took any computer classes, I do not work with technology (and I have never), so technology resources used by some people in a daily basis, can be completely new to me. The only use I make of computers is for personal things like, surfing the web for information, or as a means of communication, or for paying bills, recording cds, nothing else other than those. Then I hear about resources such as Gmail Goggles (to avoid/prevent drunk emailing on Friday nights) among so many others, there is no way I won’t be awed! At the same time technology is remarkable, I feel so intimidated! Will I be able to keep continuously updating myself after I am done with this class? Will I be able to find the most appropriate technology resources to make my teaching methods meaningful and relevant to our kids? I want to engage my kids in my classes, I don’t want to disappoint them. But sometimes it feels like an almost impossible to reach task if I judge myself as a “cave woman” compared to these “futuristic” kids.

Take baby steps. You can’t do it all at once when you have been doing little prior to now. This idea is not specific to technologies, either. When you first learn about world walls or literature circles, or socratic seminars, or cooperative learning, or ______, it can seem very overwhelming when compared to your own current practice. You can’t do it all at once.

I would suggest as a result of this course that you target one or two technologies and curriculum/pedagogical ideas that you have learned and pursue those ones. Then you can add on as you get comfortable and experience success. Just keep learning and your students will appreciate your professionalism

The problem is, if you are not the developer of a piece of software, you easily fall out of touch with new technology. Technology changes so rapidly now-a-days that even professionals and tech-wizards cannot keep up with it all. Dr. Ransom is right, stick with a few at first. If you feel comfortable, branch out and try something else.
